Salahuddin, whose collateral will be forfeited, wants PR elections.

Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP standing committee, stated that those whose collateral will be forfeited if they compete for national elections prefer proportional representation (PR) or proportional elections.

He made this statement during a protest held on Saturday at the Chunkutia Girls' High School grounds in South Keraniganj, Dhaka.

Speaking to NCP leaders, Salahuddin Ahmed stated: "They are claiming that elections would not take place if there are not any major reforms or trials. They claim that if there is an Election Commission, elections will not take place; if the circumstances are not favorable, elections will not take place. All we need is guidance on how to conduct elections. Do not do it, please. What will happen if we don't? While we discuss reforms and trials, many argue that we prefer to postpone trials rather than implement reforms. Whoever is uttering these things will have their collateral forfeited when they show up for the polls, which are all we are holding.

"The same people who are talking about proportional elections are also saying these things," he remarked. They are speculating when they make these claims. They claim that proportional elections are what the people of Bangladesh desire. Do any of you know what a proportional election is?

"Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujib used to talk about'spirit,'" Salahuddin Ahmed added. Do not discuss this "Spirit." Avoid selling "Spirit." There are other people who are partners in July besides you. The contributions of BNP leaders and activists must not be overlooked.

"Even those known as friends of the Awami League now go to the Reform Commission and talk large, but their supplies are gone in the evening," stated this BNP standing committee member.

"The aspirations of those who would exploit justifications in the name of reforms and fairness to extend their power without voters will remain a nightmare," he stated. Hold elections after implementing the necessary electoral changes. There will be another democratic battle if needed.
