Arijit Singh is now the most followed artist on Spotify, surpassing both Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift.
With an incredible 151 million followers on the music streaming service Spotify, Indian musician Arijit Singh has eclipsed worldwide pop stars Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran to take the top spot.
The British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is in third position with 121 million followers, while American artist Taylor Swift is in second place with 139.6 million, according to data this week published by analytics websites Chartmasters and Volt.fm. India served as the inspiration for Sheeran's most recent album, "Sapphire."
The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) has 107.3 million followers, while Billie Eilish has 114 million, placing her fourth on the list. Drake (99.7 million), Ariana Grande (105.9 million), Eminem (101.7 million), Bad Bunny (97.3 million), and Justin Bieber (83.1 million) round out the top ten.
The accomplishment of Arijit Singh represents an important turning point for Indian music internationally. Additional Indian musicians included in the rankings are Neha Kakkar at number 25 with 48.5 million followers, Pritam at number 21 with 53.4 million, and A. R. Rahman at number 14 with 65.6 million. Legendary figures Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar are also included; they have 22 million and 16 million followers, respectively, and rank 100th and 144th.
Singh has the most followers, but monthly listener data shows otherwise. Swift has 82.3 million, Sheeran has 98.4 million, and Eilish has 95.1 million monthly listeners, according to Spotify, while Arijit Singh has 47.4 million. With 112.2 million monthly listeners, The Weeknd is the leader in this category.
According to Spotify, followers are people who consciously decide to follow an artist's upcoming releases, demonstrating a higher level of involvement. On the other hand, monthly listeners showcase the artist's current popularity by reflecting the number of unique people streaming their music over a specific time period.
In 2005, 38-year-old Arijit Singh started his musical career as a competitor on the reality show Fame Gurukul. With the 2013 popular song "Tum Hi Ho" from Aashiqui 2, he became well-known across the country. With multiple chart-topping songs like "Channa Mereya," "Raabta," "Kesariya," "Phir Le Aaya Dil," and "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil," Singh has since emerged as the voice of a generation.
His ascent to the top of Spotify's global rankings highlights both his broad appeal and the expanding global reach of Indian music.
