Selim Pradhan, who gained notoriety six years ago after being detained during a crackdown on online casinos, has been appointed chief adviser to the party.
On Friday afternoon, the Central Shaheed Minar hosted the party's official announcement. Sanjida Khan Dipti, the mother of Anas, who was martyred during the July rebellion, read out the names of the central committee members.
The newly formed party has elected Lt. Com. (retd.) Md. Mehedi Hasan as its president, Md. Selim Pradhan as its chief adviser, Sayeed Ali Sikdar as its senior vice-president, Cap. (retd.) Shafiqul Islam, Lt. Col. (retd.) Imran, Md. Ayaz Ahmed, Advocate Nasir Uddin, and Md. Bayezid as its vice-presidents.
During the program, Sajjad Hossain Yunus, the joint general secretary, read out the party's declaration.
Inspired by the spirit of the historic '47, the great Liberation War of '71, and the popular uprising of '24, we—patriotic citizens from all walks of life—announce the formation of the Bangladesh Republic Party (BRP) in order to create a nation that is socially just, welfare-based, and free from discrimination," the statement read. Our motivation comes from the July movement, which fought against fascism and aimed for good government, resulting in the martyrdom of nearly 2, courageous individuals and the injuries of over 30, others.
