In a first for the Hollywood veteran, US actor and producer Tom Cruise will receive an honorary Oscar ahead of the 2026 Academy Awards, the organizers announced Tuesday.

Cruise, production designer Wynn Thomas, and choreographer Debbie Allen were chosen to win a statuette for their contributions the film.

At the Academy's 16th Governors Awards ceremony in November, Dolly Parton will also receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in recognition of her decades-long humanitarian efforts.

Despite becoming internationally famous for his appearances in the action movies "Mission: Impossible" and "Top Gun," Cruise, 62, has received four Oscar nods but has never taken home the coveted award.

In a statement, the Academy stated, "Tom Cruise's remarkable commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theater experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all."

"One of the most renowned and highest-grossing performers of all time" was the accolade he received, and his dedication to pulling off all of his own stunts was highlighted.

During her five-decade career, Allen, 75, has choreographed the Academy Awards ceremony seven times and worked on movies, including the 1995 romantic comedy "Forget Paris."

Thomas, meanwhile, received praise for his production work on films including "Do the Right Thing" and "Malcolm X."
