In the first Bangladesh Test, Sri Lanka rallies behind Nissanka's 187.

Sri Lanka's Pathum Nissanka is clean bowled by Bangladesh's Hasan Mahmud during the third day of the first Test cricket match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the Galle International Cricket Stadium in Galle on 19 June, 2025AFP

With just 127 runs remaining from the Tigers' first innings total, Sri Lanka finished the third day of the first Test match against Bangladesh in a commanding position thanks to a career-best 187 from Pathum Nissanka.

Prior to finishing at 368-4 at the end of play, behind Bangladesh's 495, the 27-year-old opener led Sri Lanka's innings.

Toward the close of the day's play, he formed a number of significant partnerships before being bowled by Hasan Mahmud.

With just one half-century in nine innings prior to the game, Nissanka was under pressure. However, in his 256-ball marathon, he blasted 23 fours and a six.

Mahmud, bowling with the second new ball, bowled Nissanka, who appeared to be on his way to his first double-ton.

After the day's action, Nissanka remarked, "I was really thrilled to get there because this is my maiden Test hundred at home."

"Getting a good lead and applying pressure to them is crucial."

However, the leading scorer for Sri Lanka expressed his disappointment with his exit.

He stated that he was "trying to make the most of today" and admitted that he had not scored a significant amount of runs since his century in England the previous year.

The Galle ground is continuing performing nicely for the batters, and on the fourth day, Sri Lanka's first innings will be led by Kamindu Mendis (37), and captain Dhananjaya de Silva (17).

In a mostly quiet session for Bangladesh's bowlers, Mahmud, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, and Mominul Haque all concluded the third day with one wicket apiece.

Early in the day, Nissanka succumbed to Islam's sluggish left-arm orthodox bowling, which claimed the wicket of his opening partner, Lahiru Udara (29).

After a crucial 157-run partnership with Nissanka, Hasan dismissed Dinesh Chandimal after he had taken a respectable 54 runs.

Before being dismissed by Haque, veteran Angelo Matthews, who was escorted by the opposition to play in his final Test match, made a crucial cameo of 39 runs, bringing the hosts to 293.
"Toiled hard"

After Bangladesh's overnight total of 484-9, Sri Lanka ended their innings in just three overs to begin the third day.

Fast bowler Asitha Fernando finished with a return of 4-86 from his 29.4 overs, while Nahid Rana, the final man for Bangladesh, floated a short ball to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.

Prior to losing five wickets for 26 runs in the last hour of the rain-soaked second day, the visitors had been cruising at 458-4 on Wednesday.

"A good batting wicket" in Galle, according to bowling coach Shaun Tait of Bangladesh.

Following play on Thursday, he remarked, "The fast bowlers had a tough day; they worked hard."

The "lowest order did not contribute much" from Bangladesh, he said, but they would have taken the score prior to the match.

He declared, "I am not going to be judgmental of our hitters,"

Short scores:

Bangladesh: 495 out (Mushfiqur Rahim 163, Najmul Hossain Shanto 148)

Sri Lanka: 368–4 (Dinesh Chandimal 54, Pathum Nissanka 187).
